1. 새내기 세미나 준비  ([NSDI’13] Effective Straggler Mitigation Attack of the Clones)
새내기 세미나가 8월 11일이다. 아마 이번 주나 다음 주 중으로 리허설이 있을 것이다. 발표 자료를 만드는 중이다. 오늘 아침엔 진호 형과 논문에 대해서 이야기를 했는데, 이해했다고 생각한 것도 막상 설명하려니 쉽지 않았다. 더 깊은 이해가 필요한 것 같다.


2. 영어 기사 읽기
1) China’s tainted meat scandal explained, CNN
– McDonald’s restaurants in many Chinese cities have been eerily quiet this past week. (eerily – 무시무시하게)
– But many McDonald’s addicts have been forced to go cold turkey as numerous branches have yanked flagship burgers off the menu amid a tainted meat scandal. (go cold turkey – 미 속어. 돌연 준비 없이 나쁜 습관을 갑자기 완전히 끊다, yank – 홱 잡아당기다.)
– The food scare broke when a video surfaced in Chinese media last week, showing appalling practices in a Shanghai food-processing factory that supplies ingredients to many international restaurant brands. (appalling – 간담을 서늘케 하는)
– Since the scandal broke, all the brands have cut ties with Husi’s parent company OSI Group, except for McDonald’s. (cut ties with – ~와 관계를 끊다.)

3) Your personal information just isn’t safe, CNN
– According Barry Kouns, a security professional who maintains a Cyber Risk Analytic database of major data breaches, said Experian’s databases have been involved in 97 breaches of personal information. (breach – 결함, 위반)

4) Now you feel it, now you don’t: Nanomaterial cloaks the sense of touch, Mashable
– A real invisibility cloak may still be the stuff of fantasy, but scientists have figured out a way to hide objects from touch. (cloak – 망토)
Put another way, if all the mattresses from the Hans Christen Anderson classic fable “The Princess and the Pea” were made out of this mechanical metamaterial, the princess would never have felt the pea, even if she were sleeping on just one thin sheet of the nanomaterial. (Put another way – 바꿔말하다)
– While this is purely a research project, the results of which are published in the “Nature Communications” journal, the KIT researchers do envision an interesting nanomaterial future. (envision – 마음 속에 그리다)
– There’s no word yet if this nanomaterial could someday be used for more nefarious purposes, like hiding a weapon or contraband from a pat-down. (nefarious – 범죄의, contraband – 밀수품)
